7	THE END OF AN ERA 1995 Sawyer AFB pulls out “SAWYER AIR FORCE BASE – On Oct. 1, the end of the Cold War and the budget cutting axe did what only several years ago was unthinkable. The U.S. Air Force said good-bye to Sawyer Air Force Base, closing one of the Strategic Air Command’s original “northern tier” installations and ending a relationship that first started when Ike was in the White House……..” Marquette Mining Journal
